Pushkar

Legend has it that the lakes of Pushkar were created when Brahma dropped his lotus flower to earth to kill a demon.  Where three petals landed, three lakes suddenly appeared in the middle of the desert.
Pushkar retains an aura of spirituality although over recent years it has become popular with tourists and backpackers.  The lack of traffic and scenic pastel-coloured buildings make Pushkar a pleasant place to explore on foot.  The Brahma temple is India’s only temple dedicated to the Hindu Creator and is well worth a visit.  There are however over five hundred temples in this small town.

The holy lake at the centre of the town is lovely to explore.  Pilgrims come to bathe themselves at the ghats and although it is forbidden to photograph the worshippers as they bathe, discreet observation with respect is rewarding.

Pushkar is also host to an unforgettable camel fair usually in October.  Rajasthani villagers come from miles around to buy and sell livestock as well as camels.  The fair is reputed to be the largest camel fair in the world.
